The California Institute of Technology, commonly known as CalTech, has reached an agreement to settle a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple and Broadcom. The lawsuit, filed by CalTech in 2016, alleged that Apple and Broadcom violated a Wi-Fi chip patent held by the institution. As part of the settlement, both Apple and Broadcom have agreed not to counter-sue. However, specific details of the agreement have not been disclosed.

At the time, CalTech claimed that Apple and Broadcom infringed on its Wi-Fi patent, which was being utilized in chips purchased by Apple from Broadcom and incorporated into various devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Initially, a jury awarded CalTech approximately $1.1 billion in damages in 2020. However, an appeal was filed, leading to a reexamination of the case and ultimately resulting in the aforementioned settlement.
