Intel Prepares to Test Production of 18A in Early 2024, Commences Actual Manufacturing in 2025, Progressing as Planned

Pat Gelsinger, the CEO of Intel, announced at the Intel Innovation Day Taiwan event that the company will begin testing the 18A manufacturing process in Q1 2024, in line with their original plan to start actual production in 2025.

Gelsinger’s strategy for Intel in the Gelsinger era is to regain leadership in the manufacturing process after being stuck on 14nm for several years and falling behind competitors like TSMC and Samsung. His approach is to accelerate the upgrade of the manufacturing process five times within four years. And so far, they are on track with their plan.

Intel’s roadmap, announced in 2021, starts with Intel 7 in 2022, followed by Intel 4 in 2023, and Intel 3 by the end of 2023 (recently slightly delayed to early 2024). Then, Intel 20A is planned for 2024, leading up to the final milestone of Intel 18A in 2025, which is expected to put Intel ahead of its competitors, equivalent to TSMC’s 2nm.

TLDR: Intel CEO, Pat Gelsinger, revealed at the Intel Innovation Day Taiwan event that the company will begin testing the 18A manufacturing process in Q1 2024, following their plan to start actual production in 2025.
