SAG-AFTRA, or the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, has announced that they have reached an agreement with the AMPTP, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, after previously staging a work stoppage on various issues, including wages and the use of AI in production.
Negotiations between both parties have been ongoing since November 8, putting an end to a nearly 4-month-long strike. The details of the agreement have just been released, with regards to revenue, there will be adjustments made on an annual basis from 2023 to 2025 for both lead actors and background performers without speaking roles.
In addition to wage matters, streaming platforms will set up a $40 million fund, with 75% of the funds being allocated as bonuses to performers who contribute to successful content. This model has been commonly used in the film industry but has not previously been implemented by streaming platforms. The remaining funds will be distributed to performers for their remaining streaming content.
Finally, the agreement addresses the use of AI in production. Studios must seek consent and provide compensation for the creation or use of a member’s digital likeness, both during their lifetime and after death, as well as during production or the use of residuals.
Prior to this, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) also reached an agreement with the studio producers, which included provisions on the use of AI.
