Upgraded Chinese Internet Backbone Enhances Bandwidth with 1.2Tbps Capacity, Linking Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou

China has upgraded its Internet backbone within the country to connect major cities through a high-bandwidth pipeline of 1.2Tbps. This project, known as Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI), links three cities – Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou – spanning a distance of 3,000 kilometers.

FITI is a collaborative effort between Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei, and CERNET.com. The testing of this infrastructure began in the middle of last year.

The FITI initiative itself was launched in 2021, aiming to connect 40 universities in 35 cities, pushing for simultaneous adoption of IPv6 connectivity.

TLDR: China has successfully upgraded its Internet backbone, connecting major cities through a high-bandwidth pipeline as part of the FITI project.
