Introducing the Novel Ericsson Silicon: An Intel 4-powered 5G Processing Chip

Ericsson has unveiled its latest Ericsson Silicon signal processing chip, designed for use in 5G Advanced Radio Access Networks (RAN) Compute devices. This new chip lineup consists of four sub-models: In-Die (6678, 6672) and Out-Die (6372, 6355).

The standout feature of the new Ericsson Silicon chip is its improved processing performance, with a fourfold increase in supported traffic volume and a twofold increase in energy efficiency compared to its predecessors. This chip is a custom design by Ericsson and what’s intriguing is its use of Intel Foundry Service (IFS) for manufacturing, employing the newly developed Intel 4 process.

This news is particularly interesting because until now, Intel has only utilized Intel 4 with its own CPU, Meteor Lake (commercially known as Core Ultra, launching this month). With Ericsson as a new customer, it indicates that Intel’s chip manufacturing business could see enhanced signals after attracting more renowned brands in the future.

TLDR: Ericsson has introduced the Ericsson Silicon chip for 5G Advanced RAN Compute devices, boasting improved processing performance and energy efficiency. What’s intriguing is its utilization of Intel Foundry Service (IFS) and the newly developed Intel 4 process. This move signifies potential growth for Intel’s chip manufacturing business.
