Global Internet Speed Report 2023: Thailand Ranks Among Top 5 Globally, Decreasing from 3rd Position

Ookla released its annual global internet speed report for 2023, based on data from the third quarter of the year. The report highlights significant improvements in 5G mobile internet speeds and fixed broadband speeds.

In terms of mobile internet, the average download speed on 5G networks reached 203.04 Mbps, a 20% increase compared to the same quarter in 2022. On the upload side, the average speed increased by a modest 1% to 18.93 Mbps. The country with the highest 5G internet speed globally is the United Arab Emirates, surpassing the previous champion, South Korea. However, this year’s rising star is Malaysia, which jumped to the third spot after not being in the top 10 last year.

Interestingly, the net promoter score (NPS) for 5G service satisfaction has decreased worldwide in 2023, including in Thailand. NPS measures the likelihood of recommending a service to friends, and most countries experienced a decrease in satisfaction compared to 2022. Ookla speculates that this decline may be due to people becoming more familiar with 5G technology and experiencing less excitement.

Moving on to fixed broadband, the average download speed increased by 19% to 83.95 Mbps, while the upload speed saw an even greater increase of 28% to 38.32 Mbps. The new champion in fixed broadband is the United Arab Emirates, surpassing the previous champion Singapore, which now holds the second spot.

Thailand, on the other hand, dropped from the third to the fifth position globally compared to 2022. Ookla attributes this decline to the high adoption rate of Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technology, with 95% of fixed broadband customers using it and covering 58.96% of Thai households.

In summary, Ookla’s 2023 internet speed report highlights the significant growth and improvements in both 5G mobile internet and fixed broadband speeds globally. While there is a decline in 5G service satisfaction, the increase in average speeds demonstrates the continuous efforts to enhance internet connectivity.

TLDR: Ookla’s 2023 report reveals that 5G mobile internet speeds increased by 20%, with Malaysia emerging as a strong contender. Satisfaction with 5G service decreased globally, but fixed broadband speeds improved by 19%, with the United Arab Emirates leading the way. Thailand dropped to fifth place due to its high adoption of FTTH technology. Overall, the report showcases the ongoing advancements in internet speeds worldwide.
