After both BYD and Tesla reported their car sales figures for the year 2023 yesterday, it is now official that BYD has surpassed Tesla in terms of total electric vehicle (BEV) sales.
BYD sold a total of 526,400 pure electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2023 (excluding hybrids), while Tesla sold 484,500 vehicles in the same quarter. Although Tesla’s numbers are historically high for the company, BYD’s production volume surpasses them, making it the first time BYD has surpassed Tesla in quarterly sales.
However, if we consider the year as a whole, Tesla still holds the title with 1.8 million vehicles sold, while BYD produced 1.6 million BEVs.
BYD’s success in surpassing Tesla has led to a flashback to Elon Musk’s interview with Bloomberg years ago, where he was asked if BYD would become a competitor. Musk jokingly responded, “Have you seen their cars?”
