TIOBE Proclamation: C# Language Reigns as Programming Language of the Year, 2023

TIOBE Software has announced the results of the TIOBE Index for January 2024, declaring C# as the programming language of the year 2023. This marks the first time in the history of the TIOBE Index that C# has been ranked as the most popular programming language every month.

C# has been among the top 10 languages for over two decades, offering free usability, continuous development, and gaining increasing popularity in the development of backend web apps and games using Unity. Most recently, C# experienced its highest surge in popularity in 2023 (+1.43%), further encroaching on Java’s market share.

Other notable language popularity changes include Scratch (+0.83%) and Fortran (+0.64%) ranking as the second and third most popular languages, respectively. The top four dominant languages are Python (13.97%), C (11.44%), C++ (9.96%), and Java (7.87%).

Fortran (1.09%) and Kotlin (0.85%) have gained popularity, securing positions within the top 20 languages, displacing R (0.74%) and Perl (0.52%).

Conversely, the popularity of C (-4.81%) and Java (-4.34%) declined in 2023.
