Unceasingly Committing to AM4 Socket: AMD Assures Sustained Support Until the Prowess of DDR4 Memory Supersedes That of DDR5

AMD has received high praise for its long-standing support of socketed CPUs. Users are able to use older motherboard models with new CPUs, even though AMD recently transitioned to the AM5 socket in early 2022 (alongside the Ryzen 7000 series). However, the AM4 socket continues to be utilized. AMD has continued to release CPUs under the Ryzen 5000X3D lineup.

Donny Woligroski, AMD’s CPU marketing manager, recently discussed the longevity of the AM4 socket in an interview with PCWorld. When asked how long it will remain relevant, he stated that AMD has a large user base still using the AM4 socket, and the company will continue to support it until the cost of manufacturing with the older DDR4 RAM becomes more expensive than DDR5 RAM. In other words, as long as DDR4 RAM remains more costly, there is no reason to stop using the AM4 socket.

He further explained that, from AMD’s perspective, customers have the flexibility to choose between the AM4 and AM5 sockets. If they desire new features, such as the higher performing DDR5 RAM, they can invest in the AM5 socket. AMD’s goal is to provide extended support for AM5, similar to what they have done with AM4.

TLDR: AMD’s support for the AM4 socket continues, even after the introduction of the AM5 socket. As long as the cost of older DDR4 RAM remains higher than DDR5 RAM, AMD will support the AM4 socket. Customers have the option to choose between the AM4 and AM5 sockets, depending on their desired features. AMD’s focus is on providing long-term support for the AM5 socket, just as they have done with AM4.
