OpenAI Alters Disclosure Policy: No More Revealing Internal Structure and Governance Approaches

The prestigious website, WIRED, recently submitted a request to OpenAI for internal orders, financial statements, and conflict of interest guidelines. However, their request was denied, despite OpenAI’s previous commitment to disclose this information upon request.
OpenAI clarified that they can only provide limited financial information in accordance with legal requirements. When WIRED requested the documents, they received specific organizational information. Interestingly, WIRED’s earnings were only $44,000 with expenses of $1.3 million, as the report did not encompass subsidiary companies, especially the ones providing services like ChatGPT.
One of the documents that WIRED requested was the conflict of interest policy. This policy becomes crucial to scrutinize potential conflicts between company directors and Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, who has invested in numerous other companies, including those related to artificial intelligence like ChipBrain.
OpenAI was founded with donated funds and had a philosophy of openness in its inception (hence the name). Previously, various OpenAI models were publicly disclosed. However, after GPT-3, there has been a significant reduction in the technical information provided, and it seems that various policy documents are now becoming more confidential.
TL;DR: WIRED requested internal documents from OpenAI, including financial statements and conflict of interest policies. Despite OpenAI’s previous commitment to transparency, the request was denied. The limited information provided revealed WIRED’s modest earnings and expenses. OpenAI’s policies seem to be becoming increasingly guarded, with a reduced level of technical disclosure.
