OpenTF Announces the Open-Source Development of Terraform

OpenTF, a group of companies and developers, has announced the separation of the Terraform project, continuing its development in an open-source manner.

This decision comes after HashiCorp changed the licensing to BUSL, which is not considered open-source, with version 1.6.0-alpha being the last MPL-licensed version. Currently, four companies, including Spacelift, env0, Scalr, and Sailorcloud, have announced their full-time support for OpenTF, with a total of 14 full-time developers.

It is expected that more companies will join in supporting the project. In contrast, the Terraform project currently has approximately 5 developers. The goal of OpenTF is to establish the project as part of CNCF, turning it into a genuine community-driven initiative.
