Roblox has announced the launch of an AI model that supports real-time text translation in chat, with the aim of creating smooth conversations where players are unaware of their chat partner’s true language. The AI translation in Roblox supports 16 languages, including Thai, as well as languages such as English, Spanish, French, German, Indonesian, both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and more.
Roblox states that using AI for language translation is not a new concept, but the challenge of their LLM translation model lies in translating between 16 different languages, not just from English to another language. And the most important aspect is the speed of translation, aiming for the smoothest chat experience with a latency of less than 100ms. This is achieved through a sub-model pairing of 16×16, totaling 256 models. As for quality testing, there have been some issues with certain language pairs that have limited reference data, so translation has been done back and forth to assess the accuracy of the models (for example, the French-Thai language pair as mentioned by Roblox).
Roblox states that the AI translation model is currently in testing but is already available for players to use. There are plans to expand this framework to other parts of the game, such as text on images or objects, as well as the ability to detect profanity in different languages.
TLDR: Roblox has introduced an AI model that provides real-time text translation in chat, supporting 16 languages including Thai. The challenge lies in translating between these languages with speed and accuracy, resulting in smooth conversations for players. The AI translation model is currently being tested but can already be used by players, with plans to expand its application to other parts of the game.
