Robotic Food Delivery Service Launched by Uber Eats in Selected Areas of Tokyo, Japan

Uber has announced that their delivery business, Uber Eats, has partnered with Mitsubishi Electric and the startup robotics company Cartken to launch autonomous food delivery robots in Japan. This initiative marks the second country, after some cities in the US, where Uber Eats has tested such a service since 2022.

The food delivery robots are set to begin operating by the end of March, specifically in certain areas of Tokyo. Cartken’s robot, known as Model C, utilizes AI to detect its surroundings while on the move. Personal data collected is securely encrypted to protect privacy. It can travel at speeds of up to 5.4 kilometers per hour, equivalent to human walking speed, and can carry payloads of up to 20 kilograms.
