A user of the Galaxy S24 Ultra recently shared on Reddit that their S Pen has a strong, unpleasant smell when sniffed closely, akin to burnt plastic. This has prompted speculation about the root cause of this issue. Interestingly, individuals who have tested the S Pen of the S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra have reported a similar scent.
It is speculated by 9to5google that the reason behind this issue may stem from the coating material used on the surface of the S Pen since the S22 Ultra onwards. Notably, the S Pen of the Note 20 employs a different material.
Samsung representative AndrewL responded to inquiries on the Samsung Community, explaining that the proximity of the S Pen to the internal components of the device causes it to heat up during usage. This heat results in the plastic of the S Pen warming up and emitting a smell. As the S Pen cools down, the smell dissipates on its own. He likened this process to the scent one might encounter when a car has been parked in the sun for a while, releasing odors from the plastic and upholstery inside the vehicle.
