Government of England and United States Expose Chinese Hacker Group Targeting Parliament Email, Hacking Election Systems

The Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) reported that government systems were hacked twice during the period of 2021-2022, with both incidents being attributed to hacker groups from China.

The first hack targeted the email system of a Member of Parliament in 2021, carried out by the APT31 group believed to be linked to the Chinese government. The second hack targeted the computers of the Electoral Commission during the 2021-2022 period, also believed to be orchestrated by a hacker group associated with the Chinese government.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury identified APT31 as the Wuhan Xiaoruizhi Science and Technology Company, Limited, or Wuhan XRZ, a company allegedly backed by the Chinese government. They stated that this group has targeted U.S. agencies multiple times, leading to their inclusion on the list of sanctioned companies. Additionally, a reward has been offered for the capture of 7 individuals linked to this group.
