GeekWire reported from an internal email within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team that the company is preparing to lay off several hundred employees in the sales, marketing, and training departments, as well as those responsible for technology in retail.
In addition to this, there will be another round of layoffs for those overseeing technology for retail stores. AWS stated that the company will shift its focus on self-directed online learning and training programs through partners.
The news of the retail technology layoffs comes after previous reports that Amazon is planning to remove the Just Walk Out system from stores and replace it with Dash Smart technology.
An AWS representative confirmed these layoffs, stating that they impact certain departments as part of restructuring plans to accommodate future strategies. Employees affected will be supported in finding new positions both within and outside of Amazon.
