Elon Musk, as the CEO of Tesla and xAI, has announced that the company has adjusted the salaries and benefits for engineers in the AI department of Tesla, as well as xAI, his AI development company.
The reason behind this decision was Musk’s revelation that Ethan Knight, a Computer Vision engineer at Tesla, had plans to resign and join OpenAI. He was offered a higher proposal and ended up working at xAI instead. Musk noted that OpenAI has been attempting to poach AI engineers from Tesla by offering high salaries, but with limited success.
Elon Musk added that the current competition for AI talent is fierce, with attempts to lure the best and brightest employees more evident than ever before.
Representatives from OpenAI have denied commenting on the above-mentioned news.
The competition for AI talent seems to be escalating, as Musk stated. Previous reports have indicated that even Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has resorted to poaching employees from DeepMind, Google’s AI research company, by directly emailing each target and offering job positions without interviews.
In the case of Google, there have been reports that Sergey Brin, the co-founder, has personally called employees to inquire if they plan to leave for OpenAI, and even offered salary increases.
