Enhancing Security Measures for High-Risk Groups: Implementing Lockdown Mode to Safeguard Elections in the United Kingdom

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) of the United Kingdom has issued guidance on cyber threat protection for high-risk individuals, such as politicians, academics, journalists, or legal professionals. This guidance goes beyond the standard cybersecurity measures.

Recommendations in this document include:

– Utilizing random, non-repeating passwords for every account and implementing two-step login verification.
– Keeping software updated regularly and enabling automatic updates.
– Avoiding installing apps from outside the official app store.
– Replacing devices before they reach the end of their support lifespan.
– Activating Lockdown Mode for iOS devices.
– Keeping devices locked when not in use.
– Enabling Find My Device feature.
– Being cautious when sharing personal information on social media.
– Reviewing privacy settings regularly to monitor shared information.
– Being wary of messages from new contacts and always verify their identity.
– Regularly deleting data from devices, especially in cases of loss or theft.

This document was initially released at the end of 2023, with some updates made in late March following news of election systems being hacked by a group of Chinese hackers.
