Readers of Blognone may still remember the name Beeper, a chat app that supports conversations across multiple platforms in one place. This has been a continuous news story for several months. In an attempt to create Beeper Mini to make the app support Apple’s iMessage, it ended up unsuccessful.
Recently, Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com and Tumblr, announced the acquisition of Beeper, without officially disclosing the value. However, TechCrunch reported it to be around $125 million, making it a significant deal for the second messaging app acquisition by the company following Texts last October.
Eric Migicovsky, CEO of Beeper, will now take the lead of the messaging app division at Automattic.
For existing Beeper users, the app will continue to be available for use, and now everyone can access it immediately without having to wait on a waitlist. The Android app version has also exited the beta status, effective starting today.
