Backblaze, a cloud storage company known for its reliable disk usage data disclosures, has released its latest report focusing on disks with capacities greater than 12TB. This particular report highlights the trend of companies gradually replacing older disks.
According to Backblaze, the resilience of large capacity disks is observed in three capacities: 12TB, 14TB, and 16TB, with the exception of 22TB which is exclusively produced by Western Digital.
In the case of 12TB disks, Hitachi has performed well across multiple models. However, Western Digital, after acquiring the storage business of Hitachi, began rebranding the models, making it difficult to track the specific models that are meant to replace them.
For the 14TB disks, Western Digital boasts an impressively low annualized failure rate (AFR) of only 0.34%, while Toshiba also maintains a rate below 1%.
On the other hand, almost all models of 16TB disks exhibit good performance, with Western Digital standing out as the most resilient.
This report indicates that overall, Western Digital’s various models are considered more durable compared to other brands, in stark contrast to the highest failure rates observed across all brands in the year 2015.
