Unlocking Microsft’s DirectSR API for unparalleled Super Resolution on every GPU

Microsoft has introduced the DirectSR API, a central part of the OS for Super Resolution (SR) image upscaling used with GPUs from all major companies. This includes AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Intel XeSS, and NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution.

The arrival of DirectSR makes it easier for game developers working with DirectX to integrate into their games, as supporting DirectSR alone is sufficient. DirectSR then communicates with each GPU manufacturer individually. As a result, we can expect to see more games supporting upscaling, as it has become much simpler.

Initially, DirectSR supports AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.2 out of the box, with two other driver-level support from other companies.

Note: Microsoft also has a similar technology called AutoSR, which uses an NPU chip for upscaling instead of a GPU, but currently, it is limited to Snapdragon X Elite only.

TLDR: Microsoft introduces DirectSR API for easy integration of Super Resolution upscaling with GPUs from major companies, simplifying the process for game developers using DirectX.
