Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation (VIS) from Taiwan recently announced a joint venture with NXP Semiconductor in a 60:40 ratio to invest in building a chip manufacturing plant in Singapore. The investment for construction is set at a whopping $7.8 billion USD, or around 285,000 million baht. The plant is expected to employ approximately 1,500 individuals.
This new facility will be producing chips with a wafer size of 300 millimeters, churning out 55,000 wafers per month using technology ranging from 130nm down to 40nm. These chips will be utilized in a wide range of products, including energy group products, analog signal processing chips, industrial chips, and various consumer zoomer device chips.
VIS will be investing $2.4 billion USD, while NXP will be investing $1.6 billion USD, with both parties further investing an additional $1.9 billion USD. The remaining amount will be financed through loans.
VIS is a chip manufacturer specializing in mature node technology, not the latest like TSMC, but widely used. Historically, VIS has focused on producing 8-inch wafer chips, with a total of 5 plants manufacturing 3.35 million wafers per year, equivalent to around 279,000 wafers per month. This investment will significantly increase VIS’s overall production capacity.
TLDR: VIS and NXP team up for a majority stake joint venture to build a state-of-the-art chip manufacturing plant in Singapore, investing millions to enhance chip production capabilities.
