Windows 11 Faces Screen Capture Feature Recall by Microsoft, Emphasizing Proper Shutdown to Prevent Data Encryption Complications

Pavan Davuluri, the head of the Windows + Devices department, addressed the Recall feature in Windows 11 that was introduced at the Copilot+ PC event. This feature allows users to rewind time and see what tasks were performed on Windows 11 and when. Security researchers have expressed concerns about accessing this data, prompting Microsoft to clarify its stance on the feature. Davuluri mentioned that Microsoft aims to make this feature more transparent after receiving feedback from customers. The update for the preview group will begin on June 18.

By default, Recall will be turned off, and during installation, users will be asked if they want to enable it (opt-in). Windows Hello authentication is required before using Recall and viewing the timeline. Data encryption is enforced, using Windows Hello system for decryption, and the search database is also encrypted.

Microsoft provided additional information regarding the use of Recall:
– Recall is only supported on Copilot+ PCs that meet certain hardware security requirements.
– Screen captures are stored only on the PC and not sent to Microsoft.
– There is an icon in the taskbar indicating when Recall is capturing screen shots.
– Users can pause, filter, search, and delete screen captures in Recall.
– System administrators can disable Recall on employee devices but cannot enable it without permission.

In summary, Recall is a feature that allows users to rewind their Windows 11 activity. The implementation includes security measures like Windows Hello authentication and encryption for data protection.

TLDR: Microsoft introduces Recall feature in Windows 11 to allow users to go back in time to see past activities, while also emphasizing security measures like Windows Hello authentication and data encryption.
