AWS announces the addition of Passkey feature for login authentication via USB key, mobile phone through Google/Apple accounts, and login with FIDO-supported devices. Despite Passkey being able to replace passwords entirely, AWS has chosen to continue using passwords alongside Passkey as a secondary login method. The AWS console interface now allows for the seamless addition of Passkeys, with no limit on the number of devices.
This feature update also comes with a requirement that root accounts must undergo a two-step authentication process. Initially, this requirement will only be enforced for root accounts within AWS Organization, with gradual enforcement expected to be completed within the year.
