The FBI reported the progress in the case of Remy St Felix, a 24-year-old man who has been convicted of multiple counts of robbing cryptocurrency victims in several cities. St Felix orchestrated home invasions of victims by using email hacking and covert surveillance to gather information before raiding their homes, tying up the victims, and threatening them with weapons, as well as threatening to harm the victims’ spouses in order to coerce them into revealing their cryptocurrency account passwords. After successfully transferring the cryptocurrency, St Felix then laundered the money through difficult-to-trace channels such as Monero, along with using unverified identity exchange platforms.
The jury found St Felix guilty on 9 counts, including robbery, fraud, and using firearms in the commission of a crime, with a range of minimum sentences of 7 years in prison to a maximum of life imprisonment. The sentencing is scheduled for September 11th.
One of the assisting parties in this case is the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET), a specialized team within the US Attorney’s Office dedicated to cryptocurrency cases, particularly those involving decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges and various money laundering services.
