Expanding Linguistic Horizons: Google Translate Embraces Additional 110 Languages Through PaLM 2 Model for Background Processing

Google has announced the addition of 110 more languages to Google Translate, with Cantonese being one of the key languages added. This language is one of the most requested, with over 614 million users, comprising 8% of the global population.

Of particular interest is the background translation system using the PaLM 2 language model, introduced in 2023 (not to be confused with Gemini). This is a continuation of the 1,000 Languages Initiative aimed at expanding language translation to cover 1,000 languages worldwide.
