NBC’s television station in the United States is preparing to utilize AI technology to clone the voice of renowned sports announcer Al Michaels. The purpose is to provide a summary of the 2024 Olympic Games for viewers streaming on Peacock, NBC’s own platform.
At 79 years old, Al Michaels has established his name through his commentary on sports such as baseball and American football since the 1970s. Currently, he continues to provide commentary for NBC Sports and Amazon Prime Video.
NBC will use AI to replicate Michaels’ voice in order to offer customized sports summaries of the Olympics based on each viewer’s preferences. This service, called “Your Daily Olympic Recap on Peacock,” will allow the AI announcer to interact with users, provide sports news based on their interests, and personalize the content of the summaries, including highlighting key moments in the games and details about individual athletes.
NBC’s AI technology has been trained using data from Michaels’ past commentary (he has been covering the Olympics since 2010). Initially skeptical when NBC first approached him about this idea, Michaels was convinced to give his approval after seeing a demo presented by the team.
