W3C Issues Declaration: Web Should Abandon Third Party Cookies, Disappointed by Google’s Concession

After Google scrapped its plan to transition from third-party cookies in Chrome to Privacy Sandbox, the W3C, the organization responsible for setting web standards, expressed disappointment in Google’s reversal.

The W3C officially stated that organizations should stop using third-party cookies due to privacy concerns. However, W3C had previously collaborated with Google to develop the Privacy Sandbox model as an alternative. Nevertheless, Google’s sudden change of heart caught W3C off guard, potentially leading to continued global use of third-party cookies. The delay in implementing other solutions could prolong the usage of third-party cookies beyond what is ideal.

While the W3C can assert its stance, ultimately, browser developers have the final say on which specifications to implement. As long as browser developers continue to support third-party cookies, there is no compelling reason for them to be discontinued.

TLDR: Despite the W3C advocating for the discontinuation of third-party cookies, Google’s reversal and browser developers’ support may prolong their usage.
