Departures and Transfers: Bungie’s Workforce Adjustment Unveiled – Staff Reductions, Zone Migration, and New Studio Establishment

Studio Bungie announces a major restructuring as follows:

220 employees, accounting for 17% of the total workforce, will be laid off.
155 employees, representing 12% of the total, will be transferred to its parent company, Sony Interactive Entertainment, to work on projects outside of Bungie.
One game development project will be separated into a new studio under SIE, focusing on an action-packed sci-fi fantasy world.

Bungie admits mismanagement in their studio direction over the past 5 years, expanding from a single-game studio (Destiny) to aiming for 3 franchises simultaneously, leading to an over-hiring situation. The global economic slowdown in 2023, coupled with the underwhelming performance of Destiny 2: Lightfall, resulted in the layoff of 100 employees at the end of 2023, along with the postponement of Destiny: The Final Shape and Marathon projects.

Despite Destiny: The Final Shape’s eventual success, previous cost-cutting measures were insufficient, prompting another round of layoffs. Post-restructuring, Bungie will have 850 employees responsible for the next phases of Destiny and Marathon games.

TLDR: Bungie undergoes a significant restructuring process, including layoffs, employee transfers, and project adjustments, to streamline operations and focus on upcoming game projects.
