The realm of cloud computing has long been dominated by AWS, with their pioneering services often regarded as industry standards that competitors must adhere to or reference APIs for interoperability. However, not all AWS services can claim the same level of dominance.
Recently, AWS announced the discontinuation of a few underutilized services, such as AWS CodeCommit, S3 Select, CloudSearch, Cloud9, SimpleDB, Forecast, and Data Pipeline. These services may not be as widely recognized as some of AWS’s flagship offerings. For instance, AWS CodeCommit is a source code hosting system via Git introduced in 2014 (similar to GitHub or Bitbucket), while Cloud9 is a cloud-based IDE and SimpleDB is a NoSQL database.
AWS will no longer accept new customers for CodeCommit but will continue to support existing customers, encouraging them to transition to more suitable services from other companies in the long term. Details on the fate of other services have yet to be announced.
TLDR: AWS is discontinuing some services to focus on more widely used offerings, but existing customers will continue to receive support while being encouraged to migrate to alternative solutions.
