Propagating False Information on US Elections: Elon Musk’s Grok AI

Grok, the LLM model of xAI owned by Elon Musk, spread misinformation about the 2024 US presidential election. Grok falsely claimed that the nomination of Kamala Harris as a presidential candidate had already been set in some states, making it impossible to nominate her as a replacement for Joe Biden.

The Secretary of State from five states, led by Steve Simon from Minnesota, sent a letter urging Elon Musk to correct the mistakes of the AI assistant immediately “so that voters can access accurate information.” The Secretary of State in this context refers to the position responsible for local governance, not the foreign ministers who share the same English term.

The nomination of candidates must be made within 60-75 days before election day, depending on the state, typically falling in mid-August.

TLDR: Grok’s misinformation led to concerns about the 2024 US presidential election, prompting Secretary of State officials to request immediate corrections from Elon Musk.
