The Quandary of Humane’s AI Pin: A High Rate of Returns and Refurbished Unavailability

Humane’s AI Pin developer may be facing challenges, as reported by The Verge citing internal documents regarding sales and returns. In June, following shipments starting in April, approximately 8,000 people owned the device. However, the latest figures in August show that 7,000 devices remain due to return requests, indicating a higher rate of returns despite potential increased sales.

The AI Pin has received poor feedback, with sales of 7-8 thousand falling far below the company’s projection of 100 thousand for this year. Notably, tech reviewer MKBHD labeled it as the worst product he has ever reviewed. Reports suggest that the company is in talks to sell the business, with HP being a potential buyer, although no progress has been confirmed.

Furthermore, The Verge reveals that Humane cannot refurbish returned AI Pins for resale due to technical limitations, resulting in disposal as electronic waste. This limits the company’s ability to compensate customers or sell the devices as secondhand. Additionally, the device’s network connection system makes it challenging to transfer ownership, posing further obstacles.

In response to The Verge’s report, a Humane representative briefly disputed the accuracy of the information.

TLDR: Humane’s AI Pin faces low sales and high return rates, with the company unable to refurbish returned devices for resale due to technical constraints. The future of the product remains uncertain as talks of selling the business continue.
