The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC), consisting of Meta, Amazon, and Google, has called on Malaysia to delay its plan to regulate online social media, citing lack of transparency, insufficient engagement with stakeholders, and potential negative impact on investment due to increased costs.
Malaysia’s plan for next year involves legal action against major unlicensed communication and social media service providers. This initiative aims to combat cybercrime, online fraud, gambling, as well as cyber violations against children.
AIC underscored through an open letter to Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Commission the importance of the private sector in addressing these urgent concerns. However, cooperation must be based on transparency, fairness, and carried out within a reasonable timeframe.
