The National Museum of Science and Nature in Japan has added the PlayStation 2 gaming console to its registry of future technology heritage. This registry documents the scientific and technological achievements of the country.
Initiated in 2008, the registry now boasts over 380 entries, all of which are Japanese inventions with significant impact on society. Examples of items included in the registry are VHS tapes, Sony Walkman, the first LCD calculator, the PC-9801 computer, the first CD and DVD players, and CD-R discs.
The museum stated that the PlayStation 2 was chosen for its “beautiful graphics comparable to arcade games of that era, and its ability to display lifelike images.”
