Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of ActiveX support in Office 2024 standalone version, set to be released in October 2024, followed by Microsoft 365 in April 2025.
ActiveX is an interactive object embedding technology in Office documents, first introduced in 1996. However, it has since been utilized as a vector for attacks and malware distribution, deceiving users into clicking on malicious documents.
Microsoft has been gradually phasing out old features with similar characteristics, such as Excel 4.0 macros, VBA, and VBScript.
