Enhanced Accessibility: iPadOS Now Supports External App Downloads Beyond Store Limits, EU-Specific Effects

Apple announces changes for users in the European Union (EU) as they will now be able to download apps on iPadOS, the operating system for iPads, through 3rd Party stores, similar to downloading apps from other stores on iOS.

This announcement from Apple was unexpected, as the European Commission decided in April to include iPadOS as Gatekeeper, which influences users, even though the user numbers may not be high yet. However, the business customer group has a significantly higher number than the threshold and will be subject to the same practices as iOS users previously.

In addition to allowing users and developers to download apps from outside stores, they can also create external web browsers without using the WebKit engine.

These changes will take effect starting from iPadOS 18, which will be available for download next week.

TLDR: Apple announced changes for EU users to download apps on iPadOS through 3rd Party stores, in line with the decision by the European Commission to include iPadOS as Gatekeeper, affecting users and business customers.
