Revamped OpenAI Board Transformed into Independent Security Assessment Unit, Eliminating Executives

OpenAI has announced changes to the Safety and Security Committee, which was established in May to oversee and provide guidance on the security of various projects within OpenAI. The committee has now been transformed into an independent body tasked with evaluating and advising the OpenAI board once again.

Heading the independent Safety and Security Committee is Zico Kolter, the Director of Machine Learning at Carnegie Mellon University. Other members include Adam D’Angelo, the co-founder and CEO of Quora, Paul Nakasone, former U.S. Army General and former head of the NSA, and Nicole Seligman, former President and CEO at Sony.

As a result of these changes, both Bret Taylor, the Chairman of the OpenAI board, and Sam Altman, the CEO, no longer hold positions on the independent Safety and Security Committee.

The committee’s evaluation approach will focus on five key areas: security oversight, enhancing security metrics, transparency in operations, collaboration with external organizations, and establishing a security framework.
