Unity has announced the release of the new Unity 6 version, which boasts stability and long-term support for 2 years, starting on October 17, 2024.
With Unity 6, there is a shift back to the original license system (pay per developer) rather than the previous Runtime Fee model that caused many headaches for companies. The new features in Unity 6 are plentiful, with significant graphics improvements such as the Render Graph, a new Render Framework to reduce mobile game memory usage, GPU Resident Drawer, and Split Graphics Jobs for faster rendering, and Spatial-Temporal Post-Processing (STP) to render low-resolution frames before upscaling.
Unity also showcases Time Ghost video graphics that display outdoor scenes, highly detailed character models, and real-time rendering capabilities.
The roadmap for Unity’s engine updates includes the upcoming Unity 6.1 in early 2025. For older engine versions, Unity 2021 LTS will have extended support for another year, and Unity 2022 LTS will be supported until May 30, 2025, with an additional year for corporate customers.
