South Korean Police Arrest 3 Men Involved in Trafficking Deepfake Images/Videos, Prepare to Apprehend Over a Hundred Buyers

The provincial police in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, reported the arrest of three men aged between 20 and 30, who were caught selling pornographic images/videos created using deepfake technology on a Telegram chat room. The victims of these images/videos included celebrities and minors.

Authorities identified the three men as the administrators of the Hapsabang chat room, from November 2023 to June 2024. The selling process involved paying membership fees of 20,000-40,000 won to access the chat room, with estimated total revenue exceeding 10 million won. The suspects claimed they did not create the images themselves but downloaded them from other chat rooms to resell.

In addition to the sellers, 24 buyers have been apprehended, and over 80 others are being pursued due to strict laws against child pornography in South Korea, with penalties of over one year in prison for purchasing, possessing, or viewing such content.

Earlier this month, the National Police Agency in Seoul announced an investigation into the distribution of these deepfake pornographic images/videos, leading to ongoing arrests.
