Preparations Underway for Highly Anticipated Sequel to Bestselling Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2

The recently released Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which hit the shelves on September 9, 2024, has swiftly captured the hearts of both critics and consumers alike. Developers have hinted at the commencement of conceptualizing the third installment of the game.

Space Marine 2 serves as a sequel to the original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, which made its debut back in 2011, marking a time span of 13 years between the two releases. The first installment was crafted by the esteemed Relic Entertainment studio and distributed by THQ, while the second one was developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment.

With an average review score of 82/100, the game’s sales figures, despite undisclosed, hinted at over 2 million players on its launch day. The peak concurrent player count of 225,690 on Steam solidified its position as the most popular Warhammer title in history. Notably, the game is available on consoles such as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Tim Willits, the Creative Head at Saber Interactive, recently parted ways with the parent company, Embracer Group, in early 2024. He confirmed that Dmitry Grigorenko, the director of Space Marine 2, has already brainstormed ideas for the continuation of the game, potentially as downloadable content or even a full-fledged third installment.

Prior to his tenure at Saber, Tim Willits was a long-standing executive at id Software, with his last involvement being in Doom Eternal. He expressed contentment with the swift success of Space Marine 2, surpassing the sales pace of all previous titles he had worked on, including Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein. The comparatively lower development costs of Space Marine 2 indicate significant profit potential for Saber.

Saber Interactive’s business model encompasses game development for other studios, distribution services for smaller studios, and self-owned game development. They achieved critical acclaim with World War Z in 2019, boasting a massive player base of 25 million. The zombie management mechanics from World War Z have seamlessly transitioned into the monster encounters in Space Marine 2.

Willits mentioned that the success of Space Marine 2 has instilled a newfound confidence within the Saber team, enabling them to think bigger and take on both self-developed and externally collaboratively published projects.

TLDR: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, launched on September 9, 2024, has garnered critical acclaim and strong sales figures, with hints at a potential third installment in the works.
