Another Two Depart – Research Department Head and Research VP of OpenAI Resign After CTO Just Announced Resignation

Bob McGrew, the Chief Research Officer, and Barret Zoph, the Deputy Chief Research Officer, of OpenAI announced their resignation from the company, following the recent departure of their Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati.

McGrew expressed the need for a break to recharge, highlighting his exceptional contribution with the delivery of the o1 model. On the other hand, Zoph mentioned his involvement in launching ChatGPT to the public and hinted at seeking new opportunities outside of OpenAI, emphasizing personal growth decisions.

Sam Altman thanked all three departing executives for their contributions and announced changes to the leadership team. Mark Chen, previously Deputy Chief Research Officer, was promoted to Senior Vice President, working alongside Jakub Pachocki, Head of Research, Matt Knight, Head of Security promoted to Vice President of Information Security, and Josh Achiam, Research Scientist, now leading the company’s core objectives, under Altman’s guidance.

Altman scheduled a company-wide meeting for the next day to address any questions or concerns from employees, highlighting the natural progression of leadership changes in a rapidly growing company with evolving needs.
