Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has provided additional details about the upcoming new version of the HomePod, which is expected to be introduced by Apple early next year as a smart home device. The new device features a touch screen and Apple Intelligence that allows for online meetings and FaceTime calls.
Gurman didn’t refer to this new device as a HomePod with a screen, but rather as a smart home device with a new screen interface. It comes in two sub-models, the first coded as J595 with a large iPad-level screen that is equipped with a robotic arm to adjust the screen position based on user interaction for online meetings. The second model, priced lower at J490, has a stationary screen. The price is expected to be around $1,000.
Apple is set to introduce a new operating system for this device called homeOS, as Gurman believes that since the HomePod currently uses Apple TV’s tvOS as its underlying operating system, Apple may integrate the operating systems of Apple TV, HomePod, and this new device into homeOS for all smart home devices to use.
The key selling point of this device will be Apple Intelligence, which can display information and execute various commands as needed.
