STACK Infrastructure, a provider of large-scale data centers, has announced a successful transition from using diesel fuel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO100) as backup power. STACK’s roadmap aims to be carbon neutral by 2050 and currently relies entirely on renewable energy sources. However, they are also working towards reducing carbon emissions in other areas, such as switching to HVO100 for backup power.
While HVO100 is not completely carbon neutral, STACK states that 1,000 liters of HVO100 only releases 195 kilograms of carbon compared to 3,600 kilograms released by diesel fuel. Additionally, it emits fewer small particles, carbon monoxide, and other pollutants.
The OSL04 data center, which tested the use of vegetable oil, has a capacity of 18MW. STACK expects to open data centers in the EMEA region, totaling 1GW.
TLDR: STACK Infrastructure successfully transitioned to using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil as backup power, reducing carbon emissions compared to diesel fuel. They aim to be carbon neutral by 2050 and continue to explore ways to minimize their environmental impact.
