Users of Chrome are beginning to realize that Chrome has started to disable extensions that are built with the Manifest V2 API, as announced in the roadmap (gradually phasing out by early 2025), impacting ad-blocking extensions such as uBlock Origin.
Chrome’s Manifest V2 deprecation plan has been in place for several years now, and well-known extensions have had sufficient time to transition to Manifest V3, like uBlock Origin Lite or uBO Lite which function similarly (though not entirely). However, the recent start of Chrome disabling these extensions (previously only issuing warnings) has sparked increased interest in this matter. For instance, Raymond Hill, a developer on the uBlock Origin team, posted a message on Twitter/X regarding the process of removing uBlock Origin from the Chrome Web Store.
Several other web browsers continue to support Manifest V2, such as Firefox and Microsoft Edge, which currently still support Manifest V2.
