Elon Musk officially acknowledges that the HW3 computer hardware used in Tesla vehicles is “not confident” in its ability to fully utilize full self-driving capabilities like the newer HW4 hardware.
The issue with the older HW3 hardware is that it may not be able to run unsupervised FSD (autonomous driving without human intervention) efficiently, a long-discussed topic within the Tesla community. This is the first time we have heard Elon openly admit to this fact.
Elon states that if Tesla is unable to run unsupervised FSD software effectively, the company will upgrade the hardware for free. However, it’s noted by Electrek that simply swapping HW3 with HW4 hardware may not be feasible. This would require a new version of HW4 to be designed. The question remains – can we trust Elon’s promise?
