Marc-Alexis Coté, the head of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise, spoke at the BAFTA or British Academy Film Awards in the UK, touching on the issue that Assassin’s Creed Shadows must be delayed until 2025.
Acknowledging that in recent years, Ubisoft has faced criticism for the inconsistent quality of games that do not meet standards, swinging back and forth. Players with limited budgets ultimately have to choose only the best games. Players today expect games to be of high quality, innovative, and address issues that the company hasn’t adequately addressed.
The decision to postpone Assassin’s Creed Shadows presents a great opportunity for the company to change those perspectives. It’s not just a change in the series but also affects Ubisoft’s overall direction.
Coté believes that Shadows has the potential to be one of the best Assassin’s Creed games, with the fans clamoring for a Japanese setting for a long time. However, in today’s gaming market, being amongst the best is no longer sufficient.
He also highlighted the case of Assassin’s Creed Unity in 2014, aiming to kick off the PS4 and Xbox One console era with a revolutionary French setting but faced numerous technical issues. This became a turning point for the company during that era, hoping that Shadows will not repeat those mistakes. Therefore, after considering various factors, he proposed that the company’s management team agree to postpone the release of Shadows to further polish the game and meet players’ expectations.
