Group of Canadian news agencies sue OpenAI for improper training of AI with news content.

A consortium of media companies in Canada, including Toronto Star, Metroland Media, Postmedia, CBC, and several others, have collectively filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. They allege that OpenAI improperly used their news content to train AI.

In their legal complaint filed in an Ontario court, the media consortium is seeking damages and benefits that OpenAI has gained from utilizing their data for training purposes. The estimated damages to the articles could potentially amount to billions of dollars. Additionally, they are requesting an injunction to prevent OpenAI from accessing news content for future AI training.

While OpenAI has entered into agreements with several media companies to utilize their content for AI training, there have been similar lawsuits filed against them, such as by The New York Times last year.

TLDR: Media companies in Canada sue OpenAI for alleged improper use of news content in AI training, seeking damages and injunction. Similar lawsuits have been filed by other media companies.
