Enhancing Web Security: Microsoft Edge Incorporates Scareware Detection to Combat Malicious Websites Impersonating System Crashes and Infected with Malware.

Microsoft Edge has introduced a new feature called scareware blocker, which blocks websites that mimic computer system error screens or contain malware, and deceive users into contacting support to initiate a scam.

Scareware websites often display full-screen webpages to give the appearance of legitimate operating system warnings and may trap users by preventing them from exiting full-screen mode. Additionally, these websites typically have short lifespans to evade detection, making it difficult to block them from a list of dangerous sites.

Microsoft utilizes machine learning models on PCs to analyze the behavior of scareware sites and determine if they resemble previously encountered malicious websites. If the model identifies a site as scareware, it automatically closes the full-screen mode and issues a warning to alert users of the suspicious nature of the website.

This feature is now gradually being rolled out for Microsoft Edge on Windows.

TLDR: Microsoft Edge adds scareware blocker feature to prevent users from falling victim to scam websites by analyzing site behavior using machine learning models.
