Unlocking the Possibilities: OpenAI Releases o3-mini Model to Replace o1-mini for Greater Speed and Performance

OpenAI has announced the release of the o3-mini model as promised. The o3 model lineage was introduced in December 2024 as an evolution from the original o1 model, skipping o2 due to trademark reasons with the O2 operator. It excels in answering questions related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) more efficiently than the o1-mini while maintaining the same cost efficiency.

Users can instruct the o3-mini to “think deeply” at three levels: low, medium, and high, to adapt to different scenarios by balancing speed and reasoning. Comparing the performance showcased by OpenAI, the o3-mini outperforms the o1-mini in nearly every case, even surpassing the full o1 model in some instances when set to high level.

The main limitation of the o3-mini is the lack of support for visual inputs. For tasks requiring vision, users must resort to the full o1 model for now, with expectations for this feature to be integrated into the o3 full version, yet to be released.

Currently, the o3-mini model is available for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro customers, with the Enterprise version scheduled for February. The o3-mini will replace the o1-mini entirely, allowing ChatGPT package users to also explore its capabilities for free.

TLDR: OpenAI introduces the o3-mini model, a new and improved version of the o1-mini with enhanced performance in STEM-related questions, offering different thinking depths and outperforming its predecessor in most cases.
