Discovery Reveals 1 in 3 App Users Seeking Love in New Zealand Encounter Scammers Using AI to Deceive into Love

Report from the Norton Cyber Safety Insights Report found that nearly one-third of app users in New Zealand encounter romance scams where non-professionals use AI chatbots to make deceit appear more credible.

Additionally, the report uncovered that half of app users believe they have conversed with individuals who use AI to compose messages, which is more challenging to detect than human deception because AI can respond instantly and engage in conversation all day.

In New Zealand, attempts to deceive occur approximately 35 million times, averaging 7 attempts per person – simply put, it happens every second. The most common scams include romance scams, identity theft, fake dating websites, visa fraud, or pretending to be sugar daddies.
